New to kombucha? Start here.
Kombucha is fermented tea with a tangy taste and, in many bottled versions, a sparkling finish. Choose a flavour you already enjoy, chill the bottle and pour a small glass to get familiar with it. Peach and Berry Blast are Zoh's fruit-forward starting points.
What is kombucha made from?
Kombucha starts with brewed tea, sugar and a culture of bacteria and yeast. During fermentation, the microbes transform some of the sugar and produce acids and other fermentation compounds. The result tastes quite different from the sweet tea it started as.
The culture is often called a SCOBY: a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast. You do not need to handle a SCOBY to enjoy a ready-to-drink bottle. A kombucha SCOBY starter is for brewing your own; bottled kombucha is for opening and serving.
Choose a bottled flavour and pack. You are buying finished kombucha.
Start with a culture and a brewing method. Follow our first-batch kombucha guide.
What does kombucha taste like?
Expect a balance of tartness, a little sweetness and the flavour of its tea, fruit or botanicals. Some kombuchas are bright and fruity; others are floral, herbal or more sharply acidic. The fizz adds another layer, a little like the lift you enjoy in a sparkling drink.
For a familiar comparison, think about how nimbu soda balances sweet and sour. Kombucha has its own fermented-tea character, but that balance gives you a useful place to start. It should not be judged against the sweetness of an ordinary soft drink.
Flavour, sweetness and carbonation vary between producers and batches. A fruit name describes the flavour direction; it does not tell you the sugar content. Use the current nutrition panel for that.
Which kombucha flavour should you try first?
Choose by the flavours you like in food and drinks. You do not need to pick a bottle around a health promise.
Start with Peach or Berry Blast. These are useful first choices if fruit flavours are already your preference.
Try Mint, Kashmiri Kahwa or Turmeric to explore beyond fruit.
Explore the sampler packs and check the contents of your selected option. Ginger Lemon is water kefir, a different fermented drink, rather than another kombucha flavour.
How do you drink kombucha?
1. Chill and open gently
Keep live kombucha refrigerated and follow the bottle's storage directions and best-before date. Do not shake a fizzy bottle. Open it slowly, especially if it has been moved or carried.
2. Taste it on its own first
Pour a small glass so you can notice the flavour and tang. You can add ice if you prefer, although melting ice will soften the taste. There is no need to finish an entire bottle in one sitting; follow the label's guidance after opening.
3. Pair it with something you enjoy
Try a chilled glass with lunch, a snack or an early-evening meal. Let taste and personal comfort guide the occasion. Kombucha does not need an empty-stomach ritual or a complicated schedule.
4. Explore a serving idea
Once you know the flavour, try a mint-and-jeera kombucha cooler, kala khatta granita or one of our flavour-specific serving recipes. The recipes give quantities in g and ml.
What should you check when buying kombucha in India?
- Pack contents: compare the number of bottles and ml per bottle, not just the headline pack price.
- Ingredients and nutrition: check the actual ingredient list and sugar per serving.
- Storage: understand refrigeration and best-before instructions before ordering.
- Delivery: confirm service to your address and the delivery information shown at checkout.
- Brewing information: look for a producer that explains its drink and answers product questions clearly.
For “kombucha near me,” local availability matters more than a general nationwide listing. Zoh's bottled drinks are currently sold for delivery within India; check your address at checkout rather than assuming every location is covered.
Common questions before your first bottle
Does kombucha contain alcohol?
Fermentation can produce alcohol, and the amount can change with the process and storage. Do not assume every kombucha is alcohol-free. Check the product's current label and ask the producer for batch information if avoiding alcohol is important to you.
Does kombucha contain caffeine?
Tea-based kombucha can retain caffeine. The amount depends on the tea and brewing process. A fruit or floral flavour does not make it caffeine-free.
Is kombucha sugar-free?
Not automatically. Sugar helps feed fermentation, and some can remain in the finished drink. Compare the nutrition information for the actual bottle and serving size.
How much kombucha should I drink?
Treat it as a beverage rather than a prescribed daily dose. Start with a small serving if the taste and fizz are new to you, and follow the product's serving information. Individual medical or dietary needs call for advice specific to you.
What does raw, unpasteurised kombucha mean?
It means the finished drink has not been heat-pasteurised. Zoh's bottled kombuchas are also unfiltered, so sediment or yeast strands may be visible. That does not replace checking storage, packaging condition and the best-before date.
Is kombucha the same as water kefir?
No. They use different cultures and brewing bases. Zoh's Ginger Lemon is water kefir; Peach, Berry Blast and the other kombucha flavours are fermented tea.
What about kombucha's health benefits?
For a closer look at the evidence, read our kombucha research guide. Findings about a particular study drink should not be treated as proof about every bottle.
